Despite the recent and continuing growth in prevalence of mental health and substance use disorders (SUDs) in nursing homes, and the implications of mental health and SUDs on physical health, healthcare utilization and quality, the workforce has not kept pace with training and thus is not adequately prepared to provide appropriate, person centered care to residents. This training will provide an overview of current substance use trends among older adults, differentiate between substance use disorders and substance-induced disorders, review appropriate and available treatment options, and discuss how to manage difficult behaviors among this population.
*This continuing education activity was approved by the Northeast-Multistate Division (NE-MSD), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. |
